There are plenty of iPhone cases for iPhone 5S as well as 5 out there already, but if you are a hiking enthusiast there aren’t that many cases which could endure the adventures you are going to go through, especially if you are a hardcore hiker who loves to get wet and muddy during his trips. Adventurous or not, our phones are pretty important to us nowadays and in a hiking situation they could even prove to be lifesaving, especially if they are smartphones like the iPhone 5S and 5. They could pin point your location if you get lost or you find yourself in some sort of a difficult situation which requires for you to be rescued. That’s why we’ve gathered up a list of the most sturdy and durable iPhone cases for the latest models from Apple available on the market and we’ll show them to you in this review. After all if a piece of equipment could save our life, we shouldn’t neglect it and should keep it in the best possible state. Like in the words of the wise man who once said – “Prepare for the worst and hope for the best” we go straight into our best iPhone 5S and 5 cases for hiking review.

The best iPhone 5S and 5 cases

In the review we’ll go over every single iPhone case and it’s pros and cons as each of these cases has it’s flaws and upsides and as there are different people all over the world, we’re sure that these different people would be looking for different features in their dream hiking case. All models do  fit both the iPhone 5s and the 5

The first case for iPhone 5s which is great for hiking is the Griffin Survivor Case

Griffin Survivor case for iPhone 5S

This particular case is the pride of Griffin and although it is actually over-engineered for some people, it definitely deserves to be on this list, because anything that meets the requirements of the US Department of defense is good enough for a hiking trip, right? Here are some of the features of the Griffin Survivor iPhone case:

  • Integral Display shield deflects wind and rain
  • Sealed ports for dust and sand protection
  • Weights only 3.52 ounces
  • Includes a belt hook on it

These are just some of the features that the manufacturer has outlined, but there are many more things into this case then the ones that meet the eye. There are a few cons to it as well though, but we’ll get to them a little later. Firstly we will go over the pros of owning such a piece of equipment for your hiking trip.

  • The case will definitely keep your phone dry in any conditions
  • No dust will get into it unless you leave one of the seals opened
  • Drop protection is good
  • Display responsiveness is great
  • Soft and feels great in your hand
  • Camera flap is easy to use
  • Not very big and lets you still use the iPhone 5 with just one hand
  • Lots of color variations, but our personal favorite is the black one.

  • Camera Flap doesn’t work with the belt clip on
  • Can’t really be called stylish if you’re going to use it as an everyday case
  • Lowers the sensitivity of the side buttons just a little bit

So there you have it. A list of what you could expect from this case for iPhone 5S.

The second model we’re reviewing and is great for hiking is the OtterBox Armor Series Waterproof Case for iPhone 5s

OtterBox Armor Series for iPhone 5S

This baby is something else entirely as it is both made out of different materials and looks way different than the Griffin Survivor. As the name suggests though, it is built to protect your iPhone 5 in the best possible way and here are a few of the features that you can expect to see when you open up the package:

  • Over-molded bumpers on the inside and outside
  • Silicone interior that keeps your phone in place without it moving around in this case
  • Made out of high strength reinforced plastic, which would withstand pretty much all normal crash test drops
  • Vent covers made out of membrane which keeps dust, water and mud away from the phone.

Now these features sound amazing and the case itself really is, but there are some downsides with this case as well. Before we get to them, we’ll go through the good features of the model first though.

  • Really stylish look and feel
  • Smaller in size and doesn’t make your iPhone 5S unnecessarily big
  • Water and dust proof as well as it will keep your iPhone safe even if you drop it in snow overnight for example.
  • Extremely easy to assemble, unlike the competitors
  • Would comfortably fit any pocket without a problem

  • There’s no rubber on the back or on the side for grip, which makes it easy to slip of your hand
  • The USB port is pretty small and doesn’t work with any aftermarket chargers
  • Only available in 2 color schemes, which are both really neutral

So the Otterbox Armor is great, but is still has a few cons. If you’re out in the woods hiking and you want the best hiking case for your iPhone 5S, this is one of the good contenders for sure, but it does cost a little bit more than the Griffin Survivor at $50.

There are lots of different color variations that you can choose from and if this is the case you like, you can view them by following checking the Amazon page of the OtterBox Armor case.

The Lifeproof iPhone 5S Fre-Case is also a great choice for the hikers

The next model that we have in this list although listed on the 3rd spot is definitely a great case and is considered one of the top picks of hikers all around the world. The Lifeproof iPhone 5S Fre-Case is a contender with a capital C. It definitely packs a few great features and would help keep your iPhone 5 and 5S if you’re on an extreme hiking adventure. Without any further thoughts about it, let’s go over it’s main features:

  • Fully submersible to 6.6 feet
  • Survives drops from 6.6 feet
  • Full screen protection and functionality
  • Built-in scratch protector
  • Complete access to all buttons, ports and controls
  • Anti-reflective optical-glass camera lens
  • Water proof
  • Dirt proof
  • Snow proof

These features are actually pretty similar throughout all the models we’ll be talking about and all models that we’re reviewing are snow, dirt and waterproof, but not all models have the anti-reflective optical-glass camera lens like the Lifeproof case. Anyway here are the pros and cons of this particular model.

  • Great sound clarity
  • Slim design that makes this a great choice for people that want to keep their iPhone to it’s original size
  • Offered in many different colors
  • Works with Touch ID
  • Complete access to all buttons and ports(when valves are opened)
  • Weights only 3.2 ounces

  • Could ruin your iPhone if you skip the initial water test for example, so be weary of that.
  • Hardly fits with audio jacks that are not Apple made or without an adapter
  • Doesn’t really work well with aftermarket chargers (okay with the OEM ones)
  • When water sealed it also gets air sealed and it could leave bubbles on the screen which is annoying.

So this Lifeproof case is definitely a great case for your iPhone 5 or 5S and passes all tests with flying colors. It does everything that the two cases we’ve reviewed above, but without any unnecessary bulk of rubber or anything else, keeps the sound quality without any distortions and is overall a beautiful case with great customer satisfaction.

The last one in the list, but certainly not the last in terms of quality – the Incipio Atlas hiking case

  • Water sealed headphone and charging ports
  • Weights 2.24 ounces

So overall nothing that makes it stand out from the rest, but here are the pros and cons of this particular iPhone 5S case for hiking that could make the difference for you.

  • Great display sensitivity and responsiveness
  • Lightest iPhone 5S case for hiking for sure
  • Easy to use audio jack extender (included)
  • Very light sound reduction
  • Really stylish and sleek
  • Rubberized for better grip
  • The best looking case for hiking you’re going to find
  • Well priced at just 40$ on Amazon
